The use of static and mobile equipment (e.g. silos and trucks) is essential to store and transport raw materials used by consumer industries (food & beverage, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, etc.) before their arrival at the plant.
During storage or transport, a lot of issues can arise, for example:
- Impact on the product: Unsuitable temperature, cold chain breakdown, product adulteration, theft / product loss, energy shortage, and wrong product quality mix are examples of problems which could generate huge additional costs or material losses.
- As an example, a truck stopped on the road (e.g. due to a traffic jam) for a long period time and in extreme heat could have a potential impact on the finished quality.
- Operational inefficiency: Wrong inventory, overall time losses due to unoptimized route management, unprepared loading dock, wrong material quantity forecasting on arrival or delivered.
- Low traceability of the raw materials (from harvest to the end user)
Today, monitoring solutions exist, but no IoT solution is being developed by large companies to fully address these issues.
