CO2 and CH4: daily monitoring of human emissions from space

Accurately quantifying greenhouse gas emissions, particularly CO₂ and CH₄, is a challenging task due to the various sources and changing concentrations over time and geography. Ground-based monitoring systems are insufficient to detect the geographical and temporal variations of these gases.

As a result, there is a need for a viable solution, such as a satellite constellation, that can provide widespread coverage and daily measurements over the same location to detect emission hotspots, support CO₂ and CH₄ inventories, monitor the effectiveness of emission reduction initiatives and trends, and verify emission reduction objectives.

We are developing a data delivery service that offers two types of metrics:

1. CO₂ and CH₄ column-averaged concentrations
2. CO₂ and CH₄ fluxes

Thanks to our new satellite constellation concept, we can provide a unique service to detect and measure human-made CO₂ and CH₄ emissions. This constellation is capable of observing the entire surface of the Earth at least twice in a single day.

The system provides a comprehensive picture of emissions generated by human activity. By measuring the concentrations of CO₂ and CH₄ in the air column above the Earth's surface, we can identify and quantify strong emitters (hotspots) of these gases. Furthermore, we can also measure the global emissions and the evolution of these two gasses. This information can be used by private businesses and governments to track progress in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and meet their climate goals.

The satellite constellation offers a homogeneous measurement worldwide, with various potential applications in industries such as agriculture and energy. It allows businesses to evaluate the efficacy of their emission reduction strategies and identify axes of improvement. Furthermore, the system can help researchers and scientists gain a better understanding of the impact of carbon dioxide and methane emissions on the environment and climate change.
